Background and Experience

How It Started

Kaarina discovered her passion for senior wellness in 2010 while working as a community program coordinator at Pärnu City's Social Services Department. She witnessed firsthand how structured leisure activities transformed retirees' quality of life — not through dramatic claims, but through small, meaningful changes. People became more social. They moved with more confidence. They had something to look forward to each week.

That experience shifted her entire career direction. She wasn't interested in theoretical wellness — she wanted to understand what actually works for older adults, and why. So she went back to school.

Education and Training

In 2012, Kaarina earned her degree in Adult Education from Tallinn University. The program gave her the theoretical framework to understand how adults learn differently than younger populations — what motivates them, what barriers they face, how to design programs that actually work.

But she didn't stop there. Over the next 14 years, she built an extensive network within Estonia's dance and senior wellness communities. She's collaborated with dance instructors, event organizers, health professionals, and most importantly, with active seniors themselves. She's personally attended and documented hundreds of dance socials, bachata nights, and summer events across Tallinn, Tartu, and Pärnu.

Current Work

At jelvaine OÜ, Kaarina combines research, interviews, and partnership with local dance studios to produce practical, trustworthy guides. Her approach emphasizes accessibility, health benefits, and community connection rather than performance or competitive dancing. She's less interested in whether someone can execute a perfect spin, and more interested in whether they feel welcome, confident, and connected to their community.

The work she does is intentional. Every article she writes has been shaped by conversations with retirees, observations from actual dance events, and collaboration with professionals who work in senior wellness. She doesn't write about things she hasn't personally researched and verified.
